And so Friday was my last day at the BBC, having spent just two weeks less than five years there. By chance when sorting through and packing up the house today I came across a newspaper clipping of the original advert I applied for at the BBC.

The advert for my first job at the BBC

I also found my first job specification, which listed the essential skills and experience for a Registration Co-ordinator as:

  • High degree of computer literacy
  • Good knowledge of the Internet and search engines in particular
  • Knowledge of BBC Online's output
  • Understanding of meta tags
  • Experience of using Excel

I can say that the specification I just wrote for my successor include quite a few more skills than that :-)

Not only was Friday my last day at work for some time, I expect this to be the last post on currybetdotnet for some time. I am hoping over the coming months to publish some articles based on several of the presentations I have given recently, but I won't be making any more day-to-day entries for a while. The site will also be in read-only mode whilst I am travelling, as I am going to disable the comments feature.

I fully intend to resume this blog when I reach Crete, sometime in March or April, but in the meantime if you would like to follow my journey through Europe with my wife, we will be keeping a Yahoo! 360° travelogue (with RSS feed), and taking lots of pictures for my Flickr account.

And finally I'd like to say a big thank you for reading over the last three years.

I've been following your blog for the past few months and it's been both a fascinating and entertaining read- great stuff! Have fun travelling!

good luck Martin. We'll really miss you..

Just tried the URL from the paper -- it now says "As far as you'll get from the standard 9 to 5 - what did you expect? Page not found". :-)

Have a great trip!

Sorry to see you go Martin. Your blog is great!

This'll be the part where you mysteriously turn up next year at ITV, only to be headhunted back for a seven-figure sum to the Beeb.

Accompanied, of course, by a page 5 "Why Oh Why" Daily Mail rant about wasting license fee money.

Or is your bit not like BBC1?

Good luck, enjoy the travelling and thanks for a fantastic insight into...well, lots!!
