My boss has resigned

by Martin Belam, 29 January 2004

Up to this point I have not commented on the Hutton Inquiry. I felt it was inappropriate of me to either publicly criticise a colleague, or to open myself to the accusation that I was just a BBC staff whiner being critical of the government.

After the events of today though it is impossible for me not to write. I have just been to a hastily called Divisional Meeting where the events of the last two days were explained to us from the BBC's Governors and Executives point of view.

I think it is a very sad day indeed when not being able to produce evidence of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, or being ultimately responsible for armed forces having inadequate equipment during combat are not resigning matters, but making an inaccurate broadcast is.
