Key Achievements:

  • Relaunch of Sony Connect music download service in Europe
  • Launch of Vodafone UK music portal using Sony BMG content
  • Development of content-management and system configuration tools for Sony NetServices StreamMan service

Working as part of the product definition team I produced user experience designs and wireframes for web and mobile phone applications for Sony and clients including Vodafone. The role involved managing freelance graphic designers and owning the relationships with both client and agency suppliers.

Senior Development Producer, BBC New Media
London, England - July 2004 to December 2005

Key Achievements:

  • Led a multi-disciplinary team across a wide portfolio of BBC web services
  • Launched the international facing homepage at bbc.co.uk
  • Launched redesigned television portal page at bbc.co.uk/tv and new BBC Complaints website
  • Developed new cross-platform application for online voting on the bbc.co.uk site

Responsibilities

With six producers reporting directly to me, my product set included the BBC homepage, bulk email newsletter delivery in multiple languages for BBC News, online voting, bbc.co.uk global navigation and template systems, and the BBC's email customer service and web-based complaints system.

My role involved gathering requirements from a diverse stakeholder base, prioritising feature sets for websites and software, providing in-depth project planning and reporting, recruiting suitable staff for projects, and then managing the delivery of software and editorial projects through QA and user acceptance tests.

Milestones achieved included the development of a new voting system, the relaunch of the BBC's online television portal page, improved production processes around the BBC homepage, and the launch of the BBC's international facing editions of the homepage, radio, tv and weather sites. I also worked on the implementation of a new BBC-wide online Complaints system, and acted as consultant on the roll-out of a new content-management driven departmental intranet site.

Development Producer, BBC New Media
London, England - Development Producer: August 2003 to July 2004
(Assistant Development Producer: March 2002 to August 2003, Search Engine Analyst: Dec 2000 to Feb 2002)

Key Achievements

  • Launched new bulk email delivery system for BBC News
  • Managed high profile online votes for Radio Five Live, Radio Four, and other BBC channels and networks
  • Developed popular search panel for the BBC homepage
  • Developed a series of real-time search log analysis tools for use within the BBC
  • Increased traffic to BBC Online from search engines fivefold within a year

Responsibilities

As a Development Producer I worked on the BBC's Email Broadcast System, bringing in-house the subscription email delivery services for BBC News, BBC Sport and BBC World Service. I inherited a project behind schedule, significantly over-budget, and under-resourced, but worked to rebuild the relationship with an unhappy internal client, and build teamwork between technical staff working in three different departments and locations. With a strategic decision to use open source software components where appropriate, the system was successfully launched early in 2004.

I also led the development of an online vote solution to support major broadcast output. This included running broadcast critical votes like 2003's Radio Five Live Sporting Century, The Greatest Painting in Britain, and the Today programme's annual Christmas vote.

For BBC Search I developed and managed real-time reporting tools for BBC Search, specialising in the analysis of user behaviour. I commissioned software and developed search related products for the BBC homepage and browsers. I promoted BBC Online web content to search engines increasing traffic, and made presentations to BBC production centres advising on metadata & SEO.

Branch Manager & Webmaster, Reckless Records, London
London, England - 1994 to 2000

Responsibilities

As a buyer in the Mail Order & Rarities department of the busy second-hand record shop I was responsible for acquiring stock, and then advertising the items in print, via newsletters and online. I project managed the opening of a new branch of Reckless Records, installing the IT infrastructure. I was responsible for all aspects of branch operations, including managing a team of 10-15 staff. I built the shop's database driven e-commerce website, and maintained a UNIX network that linked 3 branches in the UK.

Day of the Triffids
If everyone suddenly went blind, how long would the Internet survive, and could you still publish news on it?

The Express makes a twit of itself

With professionals of this quality, who needs 'citizen journalist' enemies?
It is hard to argue that ethics and quality set the 'professional journalist' apart from the amateur blogger, if the 'professional' keeps publishing articles so wrong that they have to be deleted.
